► (1782-1852) Político y orador estadounidense. Fue secretario de Estado en dos ocasiones (1841-43 y 1850-52).

(18 ene. 1782, Salisbury, N.H., EE.UU.–24 oct. 1852, Marshfield, Mass.).

Abogado y político estadounidense. Se desempeñó en la Cámara de Representantes (1813–17). Se trasladó a Boston (1816), donde abrió un próspero estudio de abogado y representó a Massachusetts en la Cámara (1823–27). Defendió varios juicios ante la Corte Suprema que sentaron precedente: el caso Dartmouth College, McCulloch v. v. Maryland y Gibbons v. v. Ogden. Perteneció al Senado (1827–41, 1845–50), donde se hizo célebre como orador por sus discursos en favor de la Unión y contra el movimiento de anulación, así como de los defensores de este, John C. Calhoun y Robert Y. Hayne. Como secretario de Estado (1841–43, 1850–52) negoció el tratado Webster-Ashburton, que resolvió el conflicto de la frontera entre Canadá y Maine.
